New York Advisory Committee to the U. S. Commission on Civil Rights Final Call for Panelists (5/22/2023 Deadline to Submit)

The New York Advisory Committee (Committee) to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (Commission) is conducting a study of the New York Child Welfare System and its impact on Black Children and Families. As part of this study, the Committee has been hosting a series of web briefings to hear testimony on this topic.

The Committee invites impacted individuals, advocates, researchers, academics, policymakers, government officials, and others with knowledge of New York’s child welfare system to notify the Committee of their interest in sharing remarks at their virtual multi-sector briefing that will be held on Friday, July 21, 2023. Remarks should concern the child welfare system in New York State and potential civil rights concerns.

The Committee’s project proposal includes potential questions for consideration. It can be found at the following link: https://tinyurl.com/2p9fkdjf

Please complete the following form by Monday, May 22, 2023, if you are interested in being considered as a panelist or would like to nominate a panelist:

Nominations will be considered at the Committee’s business meeting on June 16, 2023 in advance of their briefing on July 21, 2023. Anyone not selected as a panelist during the June 16, 2023 business meeting is still invited to share public comment during the July 21, 2023 briefing, or submit written testimony by August 20, 2023 for inclusion in the Committee’s study.

Nominations must include brief notes in 3-4 sentences about what the remarks would entail so the Committee can consider your nomination.

The public comment period at the June 16, 2023 business meeting will occur at the beginning of that meeting so that the Committee can hear comments prior to making their panelist selections.

Dates, times, and links to the virtual web briefings have been announced. Please visit www.usccr.gov or consult the federal register at https://www.federalregister.gov/agencies/civil-rights-commission for more information. The New York Advisory Committee will issue findings and recommendations in a report to the Commission after all testimony has been received.
