Federal Response to Teacher Shortage Impacts on Students with Disabilities

The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights will hold a briefing on, Friday, November 15, 2024, on how national teacher shortages, exacerbated by the 2020 pandemic, have impacted students with disabilities. The investigation will focus on challenges schools face in staffing special education professionals, and how the federal government has worked to address these challenges in recent years.

"Education is fundamental for every child and it's our duty to ensure that students with disabilities are not only included but empowered within our educational system. We must ensure that the resources, support, and understanding they deserve are provided to ensure them and their parents the most favorable outcomes," said Commissioner Stephen L. Gilchrist.

At this public briefing, the Commission will hear from subject matter experts such as government officials, current and past educators, researchers, and impacted persons. The Commission will accept written materials from the public for consideration as we prepare our report; submit to teachershortage@usccr.gov no later than December 16, 2024.
