The Commission enforces the State's Human Rights Act, passed in 1971. It is illegal to discriminate in the areas of housing, employment, public accommodations, education, and credit. In addition to the federally protected classes, the following are protected categories: in housing, ancestry and source of income; and in credit, age and marital status.
