IHRC is empowered to enforce the State Human Rights Act, which bans discrimination based on race, sex, color, religion, national origin, age (40 and over), and disability in employment. In public accommodations and education, discrimination based on race, sex, color, religion, and national origin is banned. In housing, the statute protects individuals from the preceding harms in addition to disability discrimination. The Commission also monitors civil rights issues within the State.
