Hearings, Consultations, and Conferences

These documents are transcripts of discussions at conferences and consultations sponsored by the Commission and of testimony at Commission hearings. Commission reports derived from the hearings are noted parenthetically. Consultations are forums at which experts provide information to help the Commission formulate positions on specific civil rights issues. Commission hearings focus government and public attention on civil rights problems and examine the manner in which federal authorities discharge their civil rights responsibilities. The hearings have also used specific communities as microcosms to identify civil rights issues of national interest and to explore and evaluate successful solutions applicable to other parts of the country. Witnesses and participants have included representatives of federal, state, and local agencies; of public and private organizations; of business, education, labor, and the professions; and private citizens.
