STATE AND REGIONAL LEADERS TO VOICE AMERICAN INDIAN, SOCIAL JUSTICE CONCERNS TO U.S COMMISSION ON CIVIL RIGHTS

(Washington, DC) Predatory lending, criminal justice, and unique challenges faced by people of color and American Indians in New Mexico and the Rocky Mountain Region will be the focus of the January 10 meeting of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights in Albuquerque, NM. The agenda includes:

Comprehensive Overview of Civil Rights in the Region: State Advisory Committee leaders from Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming will brief the Commission on civil rights projects and developments in their states.

American Indian Issues in the Southwest: Panelists from the American Indian Law Center, National Indian Youth Council, American Indian Development Associates, Navajo Prison Project and Zuni Pueblo will inform the Commission about civil rights conditions in American Indian communities, including education, juvenile justice, religious freedom, and urban community issues.

Civil Rights in New Mexico: Predatory lending, access to education, criminal justice, healthcare, and challenges faced by Latino and immigrant communities will be key topics discussed by panelists from the University of New Mexico Law School, Albuquerque Human Rights Office, United South Broadway Corporation, and New Mexico Human Rights Coalition.
